- Community News
At MHPS, families are valued members of the school community and play an important role in their child’s learning. There is a strong culture of mutual trust, and parents/carers and staff work in partnership to support student learning and well-being. This is evidenced by the outstanding attendance data at our previous two communication opportunities, in March we had 97% of our students represented and in June we had 96% of our students represented.
Communicating Learning Progress with Families for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will take place again, in September. This is our third opportunity to formally communicate about learning this year and once again we are providing two options for communication in Term 3.
Parents/carers can choose either a face-to-face conversation at school or a phone call from your child's teacher.
The conversation will focus on any follow-up matters from the June meeting, evidence of learning, progress and strategies for improvement, and your child’s wellbeing.
Students are not required to be part of this meeting. Childcare will be available for school aged students in the PAC.
Coming home today is a letter containing the details you need to know, a preference sheet for dates and times, and an agenda where you can record anything you would like to discuss. Please return the preference sheet and agenda to class teachers as soon as possible.

It’s Book Week and this year, we’re celebrating stories that not only spark imagination but also help our children grow strong in body and mind. The Health on the Shelf collection, developed in collaboration with Libraries Tasmania and the Department of Health, features a range of wonderful children’s books that support health and wellbeing through engaging stories.
These books are specially chosen for children aged 0–12 years, and explore important health themes in fun, engaging ways.
- Appreciating diversity
- Building positive relationships
- Maintaining healthy bodies
- Managing feelings and emotions
- Understanding food and nutrition
Here are a few favourites from the collection:
- Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert – A colourful journey through fruits and veggies. (Ages 0–8)
- The Pigeon Needs a Bath! by Mo Willems – A hilarious reminder about hygiene. (Ages 3–8)
- Her Body Can by Katie Crenshaw – Empowering messages about body confidence. (Ages 5–10)
- Stay for Dinner by Sandhya Parappukkaran – A beautiful story about cultural diversity and food. (Ages 5–12)
All the books are available to borrow at Libraries Tasmania and the Health on a Shelf list can be found here:
Reading together is one of the best ways to support your child’s health and development. So this Book Week, let’s celebrate stories that help our kids thrive—inside and out.
The wellbeing of all students at MHPS is important to us. When students feel safe, supported and connected, they are more likely to engage positively in their learning.
Students in Year 4 - 12 will be taking part in the DECYP Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The survey will help DECYP and individual schools to gain a clearer understanding of our students' current wellbeing, as well as identify opportunities to enhance the support we provide.
The survey gives students in Years 4 to 12 an opportunity to share their thoughts on their wellbeing and engagement with school. The more students who participate, the clearer our understanding will be of how they're feeling and what support they may need.
Students will be asked about a range of topics under the six Wellbeing domains: Healthy, Valued, Loved and Safe, Material Basics, Learning, Participating, and Positive Sense of Identity and Culture.
The details for the survey are:
When: The week beginning 25 August, 2025
Who: Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 students
What do I need to do?: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way. All responses are confidential and individual students cannot be identified in the results. Participation is voluntary.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4, 5 and 6 students, including Answers for Parents, and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are known, safe, well and learning.
Prep Excursion to QVMAG Inveresk
On Wednesday 27 August, our Prep Classes will be travelling to the QVMAG at Inveresk. Students will be engaging in learning experiences offered at the museum relating to science. We will also visit the Launceston Tramway Museum where will have a ride on a tram.
Classes will depart school at 9:45 am travelling by bus to the QVMAG. After our time at the museum, we will travel by bus to City Park for lunch. Classes will depart City Park by bus to return to school by 2:45 pm.
Children will need to wear full school uniform and suitable shoes for walking. A packed recess, packed lunch, and a drink bottle containing water are required. There will be no canteen lunch orders on this day.

Safeguarding – What we do at Mowbray
Safeguarding is the term used to describe protecting a child or young person's health, wellbeing and human rights. Keeping children safe from harm is a shared responsibility. Each year at Mowbray we have trained education facilitators come and present age-appropriate programs to our students.
Our Early Childhood students view Bravehearts - Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show. This is about personal safety, safe and unsafe feelings, and body ownership. The show also reinforces that there is no secret that a child cannot tell someone.
All Mowbray students K-6 participate in The Growing Up Program, facilitated by Family Planning Tasmania. This program aligns with the Australian Curriculum and the content delivered to students is age appropriate. Key focus areas include respectful relationships, how to recognise warning signs in uncomfortable or unsafe situations and how to seek help when needed.
As a school and we also promote online safety. Our Year 5-6 students have explored some modules from the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, eSmart Digital Licence+. Year 3-4 students completed a series of lessons using resources from the eSafety 'Mighty Heroes' resources.
We are aware that students’ online experiences often move seamlessly between school and home. To safeguard our students online, we will be sharing information, tips and resources for parents and carers from the eSafety Commissioner over coming weeks. We hope this will help families build their knowledge, skills and understanding of online safety.
